FOR THE HEART

our healthiest tips for this months heart health awareness

Happy Heart Month! This month is the time to focus on eating right, staying active, managing stress, and spreading awareness. So of course we at Gourmet Oil & Vinegar want to spread more understanding about eating right, mainly with fats and oils.

So we want you to first understand that your body does in fact need fat, as it gives your body the essential energy it needs, helps with cell growth, and much much more. You may already know that there are primarily four different types of dietary fat; saturated, trans, monounsaturated (mono) and polyunsaturated (poly) fats. The trans and saturated fats are in foods like bakery goods (doughnuts and pastries), fried foods, fatty meats and full-fat dairy products. This type of fat is also primarily considered a bad fat as they can cause heart disease by raising your cholesterol. While the mono and poly fats are found in foods like fish, nuts, seeds, and oils. They are considered more of the “heart helpers” (as described by the American Heart Association) as they are the healthy fat that is able to do the opposite and lower your cholesterol.

Now that it is understand that your body needs some fat, keep in mind it does need to be in moderation. All types of fat, whether good or bad, are equal in calories so make sure you are only consuming them in moderation. This month (as it is Heart Month) attempt to replace your trans and saturated fats for better alternatives, like mono and poly fats that will help your heart. For example instead of using a stick of butter try using olive oil, or choose fish instead of meat.

If you are looking for more information about fats, oils or even Heart Awarness Month visit American Heart Association website.
